Einherjar are the mortal warriors whom died during battle and were chosen by the Valkyries to be reborn at the warrior’s paradise, Odin’s Hall of Valhalla. These chosen are the fierce warriors that will fight for Asgard during the final battle of Ragnarok. Until the final battle comes they fight glorious, gory battles on the fields of Valhalla every day from dawn to dusk. At evening every Einherjar will be raised from death so that they may celebrate and boast about the day’s battles with a grand, raucous feast inside Odin’s Hall.
Creating an Einherjar
“Einherjar” is an acquired template that can be added to any humanoid that died during battle and was chosen to ascend to the Halls of Valhalla. An einherjar creature retains the base humanoid’s statistics, class levels and special abilities except as noted here.
CR: HD 5 or less, as base creature + 1; HD 6–10, as base creature + 2; HD 11 or more, as base creature + 3.
Type: The humanoid’s type changes to outsider (native). Do not recalculate HD, BAB, or saves.
Armor Class: Gains natural armor +2.
Defenses/Qualities: An einherjar gains darkvision 60 ft.; immunity to disease; acid, cold, electricity & fire resist equal to CR (10 minimum); DR 5/ – (if HD 5 or less), DR 7/ – (if HD 6-10) or DR 10/ – (if HD 11 or more); and SR equal to CR + 7.
Abilities: An einherjar gains a +4 bonus on Strength and Constitution and a +2 bonus on Dexterity, Wisdom and Charisma.
Feats: Because of the einherjar’s daily practice of all out war from dawn to dusk they gain one free combat feat. They must satisfy all prerequisites of the feat.
Treasures: When an einherjar is ascended to Valhalla he is granted armor and weapons from the Valhalla armory. His armor and weapons will be the same type as he owned when slain in battle but will have magical enhancements as indicted by the einherjar’s hit dice: HD 5 or less, + 1; HD 6–10, + 2; HD 11 or more, + 3.
Special Abilities: Einherjar gains the following special abilities:
Valhalla’s Warrior (Su) At dusk a slain einherjar will rise from the dead, returning to life at full health and vigor; an injured einherjar will have all hit points restored, all afflictions removed and his body completely regenerated. An einherjar that might have somehow found himself on a plane other than Asgard is plane shifted back there if slain. Einherjar are immortal and do not age.
Battle Rage (Ex) Whenever an einherjar makes a melee attack, he can activate his battle rage as an immediate action. For one round melee damage rolls deal additional damage equal to 1/2 the einherjar’s total hit dice (minimum +1). He can use this ability a number of times per day equal to 2 + his Constitution modifier.
Fearless Bravery (Ex) Because of their heroism and battle lust all einherjar are immune to all fear effects.
Odin’s Divine Grace (Su) Einherjar are the chosen of Odin and blessed by his divine hand. All einherjar gain a bonus equal to their Charisma bonus (minimum +1) on all saving throws.
